Do Ink Animation and Drawing.
Doink has an apparent simple but in reality confusing interface, which makes the learning curve somewhat steep in the beginning.
Luckily there is made various fine tutorial videos, and the app offers an extensive help menu. As a user you have to discern between "drawings", "clips", "projects" and "compositions". You are expected to write a lot, not only titles but also tags and descriptions, kind of weird actually, when you are just crazy to make an animation. The interface offers two different "editors", the editor of drawing and composition, and three different "libraries", the library of clips, drawings and compositions plus a project manager.
The features of Doink is simple in the right way!
In contrast to this complex structure, the features of the app supports the creation of a simple and very clear, cartoon type animation, and it does that very well.
I find, that the features of Doink make a perfect fusion between a traditionel frame by frame drawing animation technique and a modern keyframe technique in a quite balanced way. In Doink you kan have the best of both worlds. |
Drawing.
In accordance to the simpleness of a cartoon, there is only one kind of brush, but it is a brush, you can vectorize, whereby you can easily improve drawings already made.
You can draw the entire animation frame by frame but many times it is optional to make the drawings move keyframe wise. Props.
You can use drawings as backgrounds but you can also use them as props in keyframe clips and import more props from doink.com.
It is not possible to import images from the photo album of the iPad, clearly because implemented photos might ruin the simpleness of the animated cartoon. The Frame Sequencer and the Composition Editor
The user is drawing the frame by frame animation in the Frame Sequencer and is importing the resulting animated clip in the Composition Editor as a track in the timeline. Here the user can add props and animate them keyframe wise too and there by make more tracks placing the various tracks as layers. The user can also prolong the duration of tracks and move them around on the timeline and combine them in new ways. That is really smart.
Choice of resolution, but not of frame rate.
Exporting the finished animation it is possible to choose between four different resolution, 1024 x 768 as highest.
